The JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) is a computer-based Japanese language proficiency test specifically designed for workers applying for Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa.
Unlike the JLPT which tests academic grammar knowledge, JFT-Basic focuses on practical, real-life communication skills needed in a Japanese workplace - understanding instructions from supervisors, reading signs and notices, following safety procedures.
Passing JFT-Basic is equivalent to JLPT N4 for SSW visa eligibility in most job categories.

JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) is a computer-based Japanese test run by the Japan Foundation. A score of 200 or more meets the Japanese language requirement for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Type 1 visa, the same requirement JLPT N4 meets.
It is a 60-minute computer-based test of about 50 questions in four sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension.
JFT-Basic is scored from 10 to 250 as one total across all four sections. The SSW visa needs 200 or more, reported as A2.2. Since August 2026 results also show A1 (145-174) and A2.1 (175-199), which are below the 200 needed for SSW.
