N3 is significantly harder — nearly double the vocabulary and kanji, plus longer reading passages and faster listening audio. Most students need 450–900 hours of total study to pass N3.
N3 is acceptable in many manufacturing, agriculture, and hospitality SSW roles. For technical or caregiving fields, N2 is increasingly expected.
